What Is Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting, also known as drain jetting or sewer jetting, is a process that uses high-pressure water and special nozzles to clean the interior of a pipe. Hydro jetting is a fast and effective means of removing many types of obstructions within a pipe. It is also beneficial as a preventative maintenance measure in pipes prone to chronic blockages, especially if they are caused by grease buildup or sludge.

How It Works

Hydro jetting uses special nozzles attached to a high-strength, lightweight hose with a slick coating on the outside to allow it to slide freely within a pipe. A nozzle attaches to the end of the hose and is placed inside a pipe. High-pressure water, up to 4000 psi, is pumped through the hose. The water exits through the nozzle’s precision-drilled holes, known as jets.

There are usually numerous jets in the nozzle. Most jets face rearward and outward, back along the hose, with one or more jets facing forward and/or outward.

The rear-facing jets provide thrust, which pulls the nozzle and hose into the line, and also cleans the pipe wall as the nozzle passes. Forward-facing nozzles bore a hole through a blockage, allowing the nozzle to pass and clean the pipe.

In hydro jetting applications, having a wide selection of nozzles allows the machine to perform general cleaning of pipes and more specific applications, such as removing grease buildup, root cutting, and descaling of cast iron pipes. Western Septic & Excavation maintains a diverse arsenal of custom-drilled and specialized nozzles that allow us to perform almost any pipe or sewer cleaning operation.

Residential

Hydro jetting is a great way to maintain your home’s sewer and drain pipes. Sludge can collect in bellies in the sewer line and form a blockage. A cable from a standard drain machine can go right through the sludge and back again without removing it; since the sludge is thick enough, it simply seals around the cable and then closes back up after the cable is removed.

A letter will dilute the sludge to a consistency that can flow out of the pipe. Using special nozzles, a hydro jetter can also aggressively cut roots that have intruded into the sewer pipe. Whereas a cable machine cuts a hole through a root mass approximately the size of the cutter, the jets from a jetter nozzle scour the pipe walls and can eliminate roots, especially when used in conjunction with a sewer inspection camera.

Inside the home, drain lines can become clogged with grease and soap buildup from dishwashing, laundry, and showers. Jetting the drain can remove this buildup entirely instead of just creating an opening like a cable would, greatly increasing the time before the line clogs again.

Restaurants

Restaurant kitchen drains are prone to clogging. Grease from dishwashing, mopping, soda fountain residue, and ice cream makers can quickly build up in the drain lines. If left unchecked, the drain will eventually back up, presenting a very unappetizing atmosphere for guests and a health hazard due to open sewage in the kitchen. In fact, Idaho food safety regulations require a restaurant to be closed for business if a sewage backup occurs until the backup is corrected.

Most reputable restaurants implement a regular preventative maintenance schedule for hydro jetting of their drain lines. Kitchen drains are typically jetted at intervals of every 3 months up to once a year. A proactive drain jetting maintenance schedule is beneficial to the bottom line of the restaurant and the safety of its guests.

Agriculture

Septic hydro jetting services are used extensively in the agricultural and dairy sectors. Irrigation pipelines become blocked with silt and debris. Dairy barn drains and separator pipes become clogged with straw and manure. Hydro jetting will quickly remove these blockages, allowing the operator to return to normal.
